May Day: The Day I Was Reminded I'm Not Just a Staff—I'm a Human Exploitation Machine
So, here I am, spending May Day—a day dedicated to workers' rights, rest, and reflection—being reminded that apparently, my role in life is to keep everyone else’s job afloat. How, you ask? Let me explain.
It all started with an innocent (and by "innocent," I mean absolutely ludicrous) request from my boss. A Level III bureaucrat, mind you, who thought it was a great idea to force me, a mere staf pelaksana, to handle tasks meant for Level IV workers. Because, you know, why not? We’ve all got spare brainpower to take on responsibilities way above our pay grade without the fancy title or extra payment.
For those of you unfamiliar with tunjangan jabatan (official allowances based on rank)—trust me, this boss has them. She gets paid for all sorts of "extras" I can't even dream of. Meanwhile, here I am, living out the unofficial duties of an onboarding boss for over a while now. No title. No recognition. No extra pay. Just the sweet taste of exploitation. Ah, the joys of being a "staff".
Now, before you think I’m complaining about this noble sacrifice of mine—don’t worry! I’ve been trying to set some boundaries. I’ve told her, “If you want me to handle this, I should get paid properly, right?” Silence. Total radio silence for a whole month, and then BOOM, right back at it like I never said anything. I guess her memory is as short as her appreciation for my time.
So, on this glorious May Day, when all workers should feel empowered to demand their worth, I’ve opted for the most respectful response: left her on read.
Because, why waste more of my precious energy? Instead, I’ve decided to leave her dangling in the air. Let her marinate in her own hypocrisy. No response is also a response. If she’s smart enough, she’ll figure that out.
But, alas, I know the drill. Next time I see her in the office, she’ll probably guilt-trip me about “why I haven’t helped,” as if it’s somehow my fault she’s incapable of filling the gap left by an empty position. So, I guess I’ll just smile, nod, and prepare my next sarcastic remark. Maybe something like, “I’m not the unofficial onboarding boss; I’m just the unpaid, overworked staff who does everything because I’m too nice to say no.”
LIKE, WHY WOULD YOU EXPECT SO MUCH FROM ME, LITERALLY A STAFF. NOT REQUIRED TO THOSE LEVEL.
Ah, the joys of bureaucracy. And on May Day, of all days.
*On celebrating May Day, 2025. Keep shining, keep draw the line. Save your mental health and I may continue write in English as this is a comfort zone.
**Next theme maybe about gaslight, manipulative and so on.
***Reminder: I am here not for asking a validation. If you think so, go away and leave me alone.
